My Story
My dad always stressed how important it was to know where you come from, so that when you get to your destination, you can measure how far you came.
My story starts as the youngest child of immigrant parents; the only one in my family born in the United States. I was raised a New Jersey girl, growing up in the shadows of New York City. The whole world was available to me for just $1.25, the cost of a bus ticket to cross the George Washington Bridge. My family looked like a United Nations of biological and fictive kin: a Greek father, a Swedish mother and brother, a Dominican brother, Pakistani uncles, Ecuadorian aunts, Italian neighbors, Mexican housemates, and that’s only the half of it.
We owned restaurants and I was already learning hospitality by age 6, helping to seat customers. By 9, I had already demanded my own paychecks with taxes taken out. It’s no wonder I ended up in the customer service industry as a retail manager and possibly why when folks ask me how I survived so long working with the public I tell them, “I really just love people.”
I loved people so much I went back to school to study Anthropology, then Social Work and Disaster Leadership. For my whole life I have been the helpful face many people have sought out for troubles big and small.

In 2021 I began propagating plants for a permanent garden and this year did a lot of site work on my property. Much of the local ethnobotanical information I have accrued came from the records in the Atwood House Museum.
